Pentridge Prison Redevelopment
Masterplan has been conceived as a
vibrant new urban village within
Coburg, consistent with Moreland City
Council's Coburg 2020 vision and
principles established in Melbourne
2030. The proposal has been designed
in direct collaboration with heritage and
local government authorities and will
begin construction in mid 2004.
The 150 year old bluestone Prison,
formerly the H.M. Pentridge Prison
component of the Coburg Prison
Complex, was closed in 1997 and
tendered for private development in
1999. The former prison, enclosed
within a 6 metre high permiter
bluestone wall, is to be redeveloped as
a significant european style Piazza with
active and attractive, pedestrian and
cycle focused, publicly accessible open
space, retail, commercial, institutional
and community facilities, as well as
various types of residential
development.
A Heritage Interpretation Strategy, in
conjunction with a detailed outline of
proposed Design Guidelines has been
documented to assist the management
of significant heritage conservation
works to be undertaken across the
development site. The adaptive re-use
of primary heritage buildings and
structures is a committment the design
team has made to the creation of a
unique landmark site within the heart of
Coburg, both a tourist attraction and
destination for a diverse community.
