Stantec and Two Row Architects collaborate on new college building at Trent University
Gzowski College is home to the First Peoples’ House of Learning, a collection of cultural spaces for the celebration and dissemination of First Nations’ cultural traditions.
The College is a vibrant typological experiment, transforming the intellectual / social agitator of the traditional college through the contemporary demands of Canadian universities and a First Nation’s cultural layer. The result is an architectural language that explores decidedly Canadian characteristics of identity and the relationship of built form to our distinct landscape.
Trent University is an icon of Canadian Brutalism. The Bata Library, original colleges and the master plan were executed by Ron Thom. The campus was established on the traditional British college model with integrated facilities for living, working and learning focused around common exterior areas to stimulate academic and social interaction.
Gzowski College embodies the traditions of Trent University and the humanist objectives of Brutalism, brings colour to the campus through the contribution of First Nations’ cultural traditions, and explores humanism through identity and differentiation.
