Loker student union provides a hub for the academic community
To update its student union to accommodate the increasing enrollment at Dominguez Hills campus, California State University planned for an expansion project that entailed a 65,700 sf renovation of the existing building and a 71,500 sf addition.
Located at the heart of the campus, Dominguez Hills’ Loker Student Union is the centre and soul of campus life. Innovative in design and function, the facility includes a variety of spaces supporting the latest trends in student unions, activity and recreation. A multilevel courtyard simultaneously separates and connects the two buildings and provides a common area for students and faculty, while it promotes retail activity, and facilitates interaction among students and faculty. Offices surrounding the courtyard enjoy plentiful daylight and a visual connection to the social activity occurring below.
Complete in January 2007, the $28 million expanded student union contains a variety of lounge areas to meet demands for social and interactive spaces. Other amenities include a student bookstore, retail outlets, student-services support space, administrative offices, a full production kitchen, indoor and outdoor dining areas, a large ballroom, campus post office, banking services; and computer, game, conference and meeting rooms. Expanded foodservice options include several fast-food outlets, a fine-dining area and a sports lounge.
This project is a past recipient of a national American School and University, Architectural Portfolio, award.
