Award-winning facility furthers sports programs and gels the community
As an urban campus, the University of Alabama at Birmingham had struggled with the challenge of building a campus community that would unite students, staff and faculty. The new Campus Recreation Center serves as a vibrant activity hub with an exciting atmosphere of health and fitness inside a dynamic architectural anchor. More than just a health club, the 150,000 sf. facility packs an assortment of offerings under one roof, uniting the campus community and providing functional activity space. The facility is also the cornerstone of the future “campus green”, an initiative that demonstrates the University’s commitment to developing a more traditional residential campus.
The Center enables existing programs to expand, while accommodating new aquatics, wellness, and informal recreation programs. It also provides a gateway for recruiting students and serving the Birmingham community through facility rentals, student orientation, summer camps, and health fairs.
The Center’s sightlines showcase virtually every activity space housed within the building. It boasts 18,000 square feet dedicated to weight rooms and cardio fitness; a four-court, wood floor gymnasium designed primarily for basketball and volleyball; a gymnasium designed for indoor soccer, badminton and special events; an aquatics center with leisure and lap components and adjacent patio area; climbing wall; outdoor pursuits rental center; five racquetball courts; four fitness studios; game room; indoor track; child care area; juice bar; wellness suite; meeting room; and areas for recreational activity.
The Center has earned five national awards and ‘special distinction’ from the International Olympic Committee/International Association for Sports & Leisure Facilities.
