Russia's Sochi gains world-class skating arena

The New Figure Skating/Short Track Arena facility is to be one of the centrepieces of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. The design recalled for a flexible facility, that due to a sophisticated movable stand design can easily change its layout to cover for sporting, concerts and exhibition events.

In the Olympic mode it will have a capacity of about 12,000 spectators, 6,400 of which are on retractable stands. The complete removal of the stands will allow for direct carriage access to the field of play thus facilitating the different use configurations. In the post-Olympic mode the total capacity of the stands will be 12,771 seats.

The facility has been designed in order to host Sports and leisure events such as ice skating, baseball, gymnastics, tennis, spectacles, concerts, exhibitions etc. When the retractable stands are closed, the field of play will be 99x67 meters.

The functional design is very simple: one main hall, the accesses and services for VIPs, athletes, media and management on the north, those for spectators on the south, east and west sides and the plants at the corners of the building. The south façade is characterised by large glazing with views on the Olympic Park and the sea. The north façade is characterised by large glazing with views on the Olympic Park and the mountains.
