New Zealand Institute of Architects recognises outstanding beach house by HMA
“A carefully judged amalgam of the New Zealand bach and the modern pavilion, this opens generously towards the water yet neither dominates nor claims the beach edge. Formal and material expression of an atrium in the centre signals entry, provides storage and spatial demarcation and enlivens the large open living space. Special and commonplace materials are successfully combined for a result that is both sophisticated and relaxed.” NZIA Awards Jury.
A close collaboration between the client and HMA has produced a final design that delivered everything the client wanted in a simple, modestly sized house. A limited number of large rooms, open but with complete privacy.
All the classic NZ bach attributes have been captured in a house which can be lived-in comfortably all year. This project was one of five from HMA to win New Zealand Institute of Architects Awards for 2008.
