£1.9 billion Thames Gateway housing scheme kicks off with planning submission
Sheppard Robson, Maccreanor Lavington and KCAP, have submitted planning for the first 4000 homes of the £1.9 billion regeneration of Barking Riverside in the Thames Gateway.
Sheppard Robson has submitted planning for 1450 units in Stage One and Maccreanor Lavington with KCAP have submitted planning for the remaining units in Stage Two. The project includes two new schools, a community centre and wide scale public realm enhancements – marking the beginning of the Bellway Homes and Homes Communities Agency (HCA) regeneration project. A further 13,400 homes are to be built in Barking Town scheme.
The plans were submitted to the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC), with the proposal emphasising wide open spaces and high quality family housing.
Charles Scott, Masterplan Design Leader for Sheppard Robson, comments: “The Stage One Masterplan has been conceived as a series of spirals within the northern Buzzards Mouth Courts, which create large central courtyards. Within the southern Ripple Gardens area, kinked bands of development create varied streetscapes. The use of the spirals informs a continuous treatment for façades and ribbons of alternating terraces to create a simple asymmetric pattern. Both parts of the site contain a large percentage of family housing and a variety of public and private external space”

Subject to planning approval, Stage One will begin on site this year, due for completion in 2016 and Stage Two will begin in 2012, due for completion in 2020.
