An urban Costco in Vancouver’s bustling central business district, complete with residential towers overhead.
With the goal of designing a Costco warehouse that fits into the central business district of Vancouver, B.C., this project blends the programmatic needs of a working warehouse with the complexity of four high-rise residential towers above. The urban store is part of a 5.4-acre site and consists of 134,000 SF of retail space with approximately 700 parking spaces on two levels below the at-grade sales level. The inspiration of this unique and highly visible site resulted in a simple, elegant, and appropriate design, complimenting the dramatic and bustling backdrop of urban Vancouver.
The decision to locate Costco as part of a mixed-use complex is praised from a sustainable design perspective. In contrast to a stand-alone store, mixed-use developments encourage pedestrian transit, foster community interaction, and minimize ecological disturbance, in what is typically an already built environment.
