New London house for Anish Kapoor and family
The house occupies a narrow infill plot in the heart of Chelsea, 50m long 8m wide, and is completely hidden from the street.
The challenge was to bring abundant light into the house. This has been achieved through a series of courtyards on two levels, detailed in polish stainless steel to reflect the light.
The ground floor is an expansive continuous space with floors of Hopton Wood Stone and Mandale fossil, arranged around a star shaped court open to the sky for alfresco dining. The master bedroom is configured as a pavilion beyond a planted courtyard.
The house is a magical interior, a place with little presence in the surrounding streets, and therefore only part of the city through the experience of those invited to enter.
