tvsdesign complete phase one of Nanjing Conference Center
Construction of the first phase of the Nanjing International Conference and Exhibition Center has completed and is now open to the public. Located in the vibrant commercial heart of the city's new Hexi downtown district, the Nanjing Conference and Exhibition Center has become the centerpiece of the city and was officially opened earlier this month for the start of the Fourth United Nations Urban Forum.
"The Nanjing International Expo Center is one of the best convention centers in China. We are very pleased with tvsdesign's design which balances the functions of conference and exhibition with an integrated aesthetic expression of architecture, interior, and landscape" said Ms. Cai Guojun, General Project Manager of Nanjing Hexi Conference and Exhibition Co.
tvsdesign (formerly known as TVS), who specialise in the design of conference and exhibition centers, was selected as the winner of the international design competition for the new Nanjing International Conference and Exhibition Center in 2006. "The design, dubbed 'Curling Dragon, Crouching Tiger', is based on Nanjing's local history and natural environment" according to Kevin Gordon, tvsdesign Principal. "Nanjing's founding emperors considered the nearby Zhongshan Mountain to resemble a curling dragon, while Stone Mountain in the west was named crouching tiger." For more than 2,400 years as the ancient capital of China for 10 dynasties, the city of Nanjing derived its sense of place from the natural enclosure of the surrounding iconic mountains and the waters of the Yangtze River. In calling upon this dramatic landscape, the design of the new conference and exhibition center will afford visitors a sense of the unique beauty and history of Nanjing.
The new complex, spanning more than 50 acres, is the largest conference and exhibition center in Jiangsu Province. It features eight identical halls, with more than 100,000 sq m of world-class exhibition space arranged along a gracefully curving grand concourse. A centrally located conference center includes 27 meeting rooms, an 800 seat plenary hall as well as a junior and grand ballroom. The new conference center features a unique multi-purpose hall accommodating banquet, assembly or exhibition events. Also unique to the Nanjing International Conference and Exhibition center are a series of lakes, arranged along the grand concourse, which can be rapidly drained to provide more than 30,000 square meters of outdoor exhibition space for large-scale displays.
To complement the new HEXI district, tvsdesign envisioned a masterplan of future hotels, retail, and office space, all integrated with local mass-transit. Thus far, the first phase of the new conference and exhibition center has already hosted the Fifth Jiangsu International Machine Tool and Moulds Exhibition and the Fourth China Nanjing Software Expo. "tvsdesign is very excited about our uniquely functional yet iconic design solutions for our clients in China," says Yaomin Xue, Asia-Pacific Manager. "The opening of the new Nanjing International Conference and Exhibition Center represents another major venue realized by tvsdesign in China, the New China International Exhibition Center in Beijing having opened to much fanfare earlier this year. In addition to convention centers, tvsdesign has participated in a variety of project types including the Modern Plaza retail mall in Suzhou and the 21st Century Tower along the east harbor in Dalian."
