SAAJ Design complete new peninsula retreat.

This house is about the journey…..the optimistic idea of leaving the city to retreat to the peninsula.

The architects' approach has been to partially submerge the house into the hillside. The form gently rises out of the ground to the north-west (both in plan and section) and opens to the east. In plan and section the house cranks in an expanding boomerang shape, maximizing north orientated living whilst providing a masonry backbone wall which protects against prevailing winds and offers a thermal mass to absorb the energy of the afternoon sun.

In plan the entry foyer / gallery is pivotal between the visitors' wing and the communal living areas. The roof creates the house as a singular object within the landscape and organises the three zones of the plan below – the visitors' wing, the central communal living and the main bedroom retreat. It cranks, lifts and folds in a fluid motion referencing the natural composition of the site contours, primary tree lines, flight and the distant ridgeline.
