17th Annual Competition Diploma Show for Russian Architectural Schools

The “New Russian Architect” award at the 17th Annual Competition Diploma Show for Russian Architectural Schools, which was held in Samara, a large industrial city on the River Volga, has been judged for the first time by an independent jury with international representation which includes British Architect, James McAdam who was chairman of the jury.

In the past this has been dealt with by an internal commission with the resultant review lacking in independent criticism and constructive suggestions for the future.

This year the independent jury was set-up to bring in fresh criticism and different ways of thinking to the process. The jury was initiated by Oscar Mamleev (Head of Chair of Industrial Architecture at Moscow Architectural Institute), and comprised a group of practicing and academic Russian and international architects, as follows:

Oscar Mamleev (Moscow)
James McAdam (London) – chairman of jury
Peter Ebner (Munich)
Anton Mosin (Moscow)
Nariney Tuchina (Moscow)
Natalia Lazovskaya (Minsk)
Sergey Malakhov (Samara)

Five projects were awarded prizes for the New Russian Architect award as follows:

Business Centre – Samara
Office development – Samara
Landscape Park – Moscow
Gallery Space – Kharkov
Urban planning – Kazan

“There is obviously a lot of talent in the architectural schools, but there seems to be a lack of direction in terms of understanding current issues and the actual role of the architect today,” says McAdam.

“The project work of the Samara school was by far the most developed and in touch with everyday architectural issues. The work of other schools varied from utopian fantasies to 1980s formalism, “ he adds.

The annual diploma show is where all Russian Architectural schools enter their best diploma works (by quota 1:5). In parallel there is a conference on architectural education. Rectors, heads of schools and senior professors are present. The show takes place in a different city every year and this year it was in Samara. A series of prizes and certificates are awarded to the best works.
