HHF architects designs and completes the Mini Structure for Children in China
The Jinhua Architecture Park is an important part of the urban redevelopment of the city‘s so called Jinhua new district. The park landscape is designed by the artist Ai Weiwei and its 17 public structures are designed by architectural teams and artists from 7 different countries. Considering the difficulties to control the construction over such a long distance, HHF architects designed a structure with very few details.
The ‚baby dragon‘ is located at a corner of the walkway system and is articulated in three parts. It creates a boundary between an open lawn and a space under evergreen trees in the future. The three shelters of the pavilion create different conditions of intimacy, control and usage and allow different ways of interaction between the children and the grownups.
The structure is built completely of colored concrete on site only the floor of the pavilion is partly covered by the same grey brick as used for the paths. The massive wall is perforated from both sides and the children can climb through the wall from one side to the other. Some of the openings are just big holes, others are tangentially connected. All the openings are the result of a system of eleven different shapes, which can be added together to an endless pattern. Various combinations of complex openings are possible and the result is a very differentiated three-dimensional structure.
