University of South Alabama opens new cancer center

RMJM Hiller with CLA Architecture of Birmingham has completed a new 125,000-square foot cancer center at the University of South Alabama that accommodates clinical care and cancer research under one roof. It is hoped the combined facility will speed the advancement of medical discoveries from the laboratory to clinical applications.

“The new cancer facility is a place where scientists, physicians and caregivers will work together,” said RMJM Design Architect Colin Mosher. “Our design captures the spirit of collaboration by situating the building so that prevention and education, clinical care and research are all integrated. We hope this building will advance standards of care and research and bring a cure to cancer a few steps closer by connecting the process of drug creation and clinical trials.”

A signature element of the design is a glass wall in the main lobby dubbed “the window of hope”. It provides a transparent separation between patients and researchers, allowing patients to see the research going on and researchers to see the patients they are potentially helping, hopefully inspiring both groups.

The Center hopes its combined facility will be a model for other facilities of its kind.
