Unselected competition project for italian airport development
Lamezia Airport project’s image is a metaphor of its function and linking to the seaside site. It recalls sails, kites, bird’s wings and also sea waves. The steel structure clad in white concrete is very simple and is shaped to gain a high level of static performance and a unique open internal space. So, this space is entirely flexible and adaptable, able to host functions at the same time as departures and arrivals, check in, restaurants, shops, offices.
The building's profile is based on two converging steel arches, which come from the ground at the backside, are based on two structural supports in the middle and ends in a cantilevered surface on the front. The building is expressive of a bird, symbolizing flight with the same dynamism than Saarinen's TWA terminal in New York, the two main arches coming together at the bird's beak.
