Competition results for Croatia’s main international airport announced

Zagreb Airport, also known as Pleso Airport, is about to get a major facelift. Last August an international competition was launched for the final architectural and urban planning solution for the new passenger’s terminal, located about 10 km from the centre of Zagreb.

Shortlisted projects included solutions from Foster + Partners, Shigeru Ban Architects and Zaha Hadid Arcitects. The successful design, however, is a collaboration between IGH d.d., Neidhardt arhitekti Ltd and Kincl Ltd. and incorporates retail outlets, dining units, banks and a luxury hotel housed in an undulating glass structure.

The spinal formal structure of the new passenger terminal acts as a link between two important south and south-east city axes, the Zagreb central axe and the new post-industrial Zagreb CBD east tangent. Both axes converge into the South-East Zagreb - Sisak expressway, while the Airport City remains the focal point of the urban composition. Two perpendicular linear systems of wide landscaped parks constitute the backbone of the urban planning concept.

Ground breaking is due in 2009 with completion set for 2012.
