Rosales + Partners wins national competition for Gateway Pedestrian Bridge in Washington DC

Miguel Rosales AIA, president of Rosales + Partners, announced today that his design for a new Gateway Pedestrian Bridge has won an invited national competition organized by the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation in Washington DC; seven firms participated in the competition. The 480' curved bridge will cross over a major transformation corridor that includes Interstate 1-295, Metro lines and regional railroad tracks. The unique bridge will connect the proposed Kenilworth/Parkside development project, a 1 million square feet of commercial and residential development, to the Minnesota Avenue Metro Station and the adjacent community. The curved bridge is an innovative structure that consists of a series of thin steel rings that are inter connected with longitudinal steel tubes to create an elliptical section with a tranparent lattice appearance. Suspension cables attache dto the exterior of the rings help carry th eloads and aid in the structural performance of the bridge. These cables will not only provide a necessary functional role but will also add visual interest to the bridge creating a unique and elegant appearance. The bridge will be constructed in three segments and supported by four slender elliptical concrete piers. At the end of each segment the rings will become thicker in order to tranfer the loads to the foundations. At these nodes, both elevators and electrical escalators will bring user down to grade and platform levels. The $7.9m bridge will be manufactured with standard steel and cable elements off site and then brought to the area in segments. The segments will be installed overnight using an erection crane in order to minimize discruption of both vehicular and rail traffic along the busy throughfare.
