The opening of the Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Rampart Community Police Station heralds a new generation of civic buildings in the US
This week saw the opening of the Rampart Area Community Police Station at 1401 West 6th Street
Los Angeles. The design by Perkins and Will meets a changing requirement for police stations to ‘embrace’ their neighborhoods and be more transparent.
Many police stations in the US date back to the 1960s when security was a key driver in their design which were typically bastion-like and ‘insular’ from the often violent streets surrounding them.
In March 2002, the voters in Los Angeles passed a $600 million dollar public safety measure to improve, renovate and expand public safety facilities.
The original Rampart Station was established in 1966 and was located at 2710 West Temple Street. It became too small to house its 380 sworn and civilian personnel, so Rampart detectives had to work at a separate location, 303 South Union Avenue.
The new state-of-the-art facility, designed by the architectural firm of Perkins and Will, is “Gold-certified” by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It will house patrol officers, support staff and detectives.
