RB Arkitektur's 'Villa UH1' emerges from the landscape

UH1 is as much building as landscape. The house grows out of the surrounding slope as the land becomes the roof.

The site of Villa UH1 is a soft natural slope in a residential area. From the beginning RB Arkitektur sought to make the building as much a natural part of the site as possible. While laying out the different functions of the house according to the street, neighbouring houses and the orientation of the sun, they discovered quite quickly that by creating a patio, the house would get a terrace facing the evening sun while at the same time being shut off from people’s view.

In order to emphasize the landscaped aspect of the house, they let the roof literally grow out of the ground and become covered by sedum plants, thus eliminating the border between building and landscape.

Geothermal energy is harnessed by a heat pump to supply an under-floor heating system throughout the house.
