West Cheshire College receives planning permission for two unique new-build projects in Ellesmere Port and Chester

West Cheshire College received planning permission yesterday for two new-build projects at its Ellesmere Port and Handbridge campuses, at a combined cost of around £41million. Bond Bryan Architects have been tasked with designing the new buildings and aim to begin construction in March 2009, with the college taking full occupation of them in time for the new academic year in 2011. The main focus of both buildings will be an internal project court where vocational students of different trades will be able to work alongside each other in building a house, within the project court itself.

Bond Bryan Architects has developed the two new schemes in parallel with each other. The new building at the Handbridge Campus will be 6,720 sq m accommodated over three floors, with the central area consisting of a two-storey project court where vocational students of various construction trades will be able to build a house. The design for the College’s campus at Ellesmere Port consists of a building area of around 20,500 sq m with accommodation across five floors and is arranged as an L-shaped block meeting at a cylindrical form containing a circular ramp from the first to the fourth floor.

Through this unique method of allowing students to build a house on-site, West Cheshire College aims to maximise performance by enabling and motivating young people to learn in different ways. Deputy Principal of West Cheshire College, Penny Horsefield, believes that the buildings will provide a unique further education solution, “The integration of a range of skills from the architects’ team and the college team… will take the teaching and learning experience in a vocational college to a new level.”
