SMC Hickton Madeley produces class act for city school

A leading Midlands architecture and design consultancy has helped to change the lives of pupils at an inner city primary school in Birmingham. SMC Hickton Madeley, which is based in Telford and has an office in Birmingham, was responsible for the stylish new £400,000 classroom extension at St Mary’s Church of England Primary School in Handsworth. The award-winning practice, part of the AIM-listed UK-wide SMC Group, completed the design and project management of the two-storey facility as part of a five-year framework agreement with Birmingham City Council to improve the city’s schools of which the company has now completed more than twenty. The two-classroom extension is attached to the two-storey main school building and benefits from a lift. It has replaced a mobile classroom that was sited in the school playground and used throughout the year by St Mary’s Primary School’s junior-aged pupils of whom 43 have special needs including a wheelchair user. Acting on behalf of the City Council, SMC Hickton Madeley managed the one-year project in partnership with the main contractor G F Tomlinson, quantity surveyors Edmond Shipway and Engineers Scott Wilson Inc Cameron Taylor.
