Friedson's design breaks new ground
The new 460,000 sq ft cardiovascular center at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston contains technologically advanced operating rooms for cardiac and vascular surgery, the radiation oncolgy department, outpatient clinics, and approximately 150 beds for cardiovascular patients.
With the intent of providing an experience to patients and families that is soothing, interesting, and dynamic, the exterior envelope is clad in a unitized curtainwall system with various degrees of translucency, transparency, and opaqueness. The geometry of the system varies, giving each room a special character and feel. Each room will have a slightly different color scheme, enabling the facade to appear dynamic, expressing change in light transmittance and intensity, color and saturation, from day to night.
