Cannon Design create sustainable sports centre for University of Maine
The 86,000 sq ft recreation center at University of Maine features a 4-court gymnasium, fitness center, natatorium, jogging track, squash courts, and support spaces.
The extensive use of glass presents views of the activities within and provides users with views of the scenic campus. The building's exterior material palette of copper panels, dry-set sandstone, precast concrete, and curtainwall harmonizes with its natural wood setting. Inside, laminated wood columns and beams, wood paneling, and stone evoke a natural, organic ambiance.
Sustainably designed, the building incorporates exterior sun control devices, heat recovery systems, and recyclable materials to achieve a LEED Silver certification.
