The facade as connector
The historic "shop-house" is an icon of the architectural heritage in Singapore and the subject of numerous architectural interventions. Ministry of Design's (MOD) first public building is conceived not merely as architecture but also as art, having the façade of its second skin animated with installation artwork.
MOD consolidated the allowable floor area into a compact form free from its party walls to allow ample sunlight through to the dark interiors, and created a double layering between this form and the original building edge.
A dynamic sculptural object begins at the ground floor as canopy, signage and furniture, and weaves its way upwards as a free-flowing ribbon, finally crowning the rooftop as both trellis and outdoor furniture.
