HKS, Inc. designs Capital Health System New Mercer Hospital in New Jersey
Capital Health System’s 600,000-square-foot, 350-bed replacement hospital will allow the healthcare provider to serve a suburban market while continuing operations in its existing urban locations. Future phases will increase the bed count to 500 and add up to 500,000 square feet of medical office building space. The master plan allows all phases to be completed in a contiguous footprint.
The exterior is simulated stone, precast, and brick – with a large glass curtainwall throughout. A five-storey atrium creates an open space in the main entry. The natural daylighting permeates deep into the facility, creating a peaceful ambiance.
Trees and wetlands are showcased throughout the campus. Siting the facility without disrupting the natural features was a significant challenge – one that the owner and team were willing to work with to maintain the organic environment. Gardens with water features and native plants cater to the main entry, women’s and children’s, staff and physician, emergency department therapeutic, and cancer centers. Completed in association with Array Healthcare Facilities Solutions.
