Residential conversion approved for Brooklyn’s Domino Sugar Refinery building
The Domino Sugar Plant, which has dominated the Brooklyn waterfront since the late 19th century, is being transformed into housing by New York architect and historic preservation specialist Beyer Blinder Belle.
The design, which has gone through several iterations with the City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission, features a three and four-storey rooftop glass and steel addition and preserves the plant’s iconic 40-foot tall Domino Sugar sign, which is to be moved to the top of the building.
The New Domino, as the project is called, will provide 2,200 residential units, 660 of which are affordable units, and 220,000 sq ft of retail, commercial, community and cultural space on an 11.2-acre site on the East River.
