Editorial

Rome to be the home of another creation by Renzo Piano

The pen of Italy’s most prestigious architect has designed a luminous residential complex that endeavours to be a prime example of sustainable architecture for the living modern city.

It will be located in the fast growing EUR district in the south of Rome, facing Fuksas New Centre of Congress and the EUR artificial lake, at the junction of 2 important arteries in viale Europa 242.

The new luxury building defined by Piano as a “magic box” spawned from the philosophy that “a city must be alive and live”. The complex will be mixed purpose with a high prevalence of residences. The ground floor of the building will offer some commercial spaces. The first floor will de dedicated to office spaces. The rest will be residences for a maximum of 300 apartments with surfaces ranging from 60sq m to 130sq m, with the exception of lofts which will be larger. The height of the buildings will match the 39m of the neighbouring New Centre of Congress by Studio Fuksas.

The concept is that of an open court. The aligned residential volumes will be raised from the ground and crossed by generous walking porticos, creating an internal space used as an urban park with big trees. The south facing position of the park will guarantee light abundance and heat across all the seasons.

The exterior with be characterized by glass that as skin will cover all the volumes. There will also be a second glass skin that will create “winter gardens”, adequately deep spaces that will offer a contact with the exterior in the summer and further isolation in winter.

With the view of improving the quality of life and the level of urban sustainability, the side facing the lake will be solely dedicated to a large greenhouse for the community cultivation of fruit and vegetables and the roofs of the main buildings will host gardens: Piano’s plan encompasses an urban vision with perspective for an area that needs to thrive and expand.
