Designs will celebrate 100th anniversary of plan for Chicago

Architects Zaha Hadid and Ben van Berkel have been commissioned to design temporary pavilions in Chicago’s Millennium Park as focal points for the 100th anniversary celebration of Daniel Burnham’s influential Plan of Chicago, which kicks off next year.

While designs have not yet been released, the architects promise to create innovative structures that symbolize Chicago’s commitment to cutting edge design and bold thinking. The event, which opens next June, will include hundreds of educational programs, arts events and open space projects related to Burnham’s big dreams for the future.

Frank Gehry’s permanent Jay Pritzker Pavilion also stands in the park as a memorial to the Chicago business man who introduced the Pritzker Architecture Prize. The pavilion is home to Chicago's Grant Park Music Festival.

The new pavilions will be the latest in a series of temporary structures designed by star architects this year. The attraction for architects is undoubtedly that these commissions offer much freedom and hence room for innovation.

Other interesting pavilions designed this year by noted architects to mark such events as expos and park openings include Shigeru Ban’s Artek Pavilion which was originally designed for the2007 Salone del Mobile and is now for sale at Sotheby’s, MIT’s Digital Water Pavilion which was designed for Spain’s Expo Zaragoza 2008; Foster and Partners’ United Arab Emirates Pavilion for Shanghai’s Expo 2010, Zaha Hadid’s Zaragoza Pavilion and Dominique Perrault’s Priory Park Pavilion designed for the U.K.
