TVA Architects readies Hayward Field for 2008 Olympic Track & Field Trials
The 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials - Track and Field are underway in Eugene, Oregon. At center stage is Hayward Field, the University of Oregon’s hallowed venue, newly renovated by TVA Architects Inc. The Portland, Oregon-based firm was selected by the University to lead a major upgrade of the historic facility in preparation for its return to the world stage during the U.S. Track and Field Trials.
The renovation preserved elements of the revered venue’s celebrated past, while making major upgrades for the 21st century and enhancing the event experience for athletes and spectators alike. Upgrades included a completely resurfaced track, resulting in a Class I Track Certificate awarded by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The field layout was altered to accommodate multiple events and allow view of full movement of the athletes’ performance by spectators, coaches and competitors. The facility also received new “green” energy-efficient stadium lighting, a state-of-the-art video scoreboard, a new sound system, and temporary seating to accommodate nearly 16,000 spectators.
TVA’s team was led by design principal Robert L. Thompson, FAIA.
