To the rear of a Grade 1 listed terrace in the heart of Calne, studio octopi has designed a low slung contemporary two storey house for a disabled private client. Sited amongst a former orchard the house draws upon the rhythm of the remaining fruit trees to create a simple inward-looking house built around a courtyard with a single fig tree in the centre.
The project will source the timber frame locally and use ‘Hemcrete’ for the wall construction further reducing the carbon footprint of the build. Internally the living spaces look out north to the remaining fruit trees and south into the shaded fig tree courtyard. A small platform lift provides access to the second floor studio and study, 7m long and 2.5m wide.
