Walters and Cohen design and complete Redbrook Hayes Primary School in Rugeley
Our team was asked by the Joint Schools Property Unit to design a new one-form entry primary school, including a nursery and branch library. Our experience of designing an Exemplar Primary School for the DfES has proved invaluable in understanding what is required in today’s schools and what might be required in 20 years’ time. Our design for this new school adjusts the generic principles of the exemplar to suit the site while also responding to the input from public consultation.
The new branch library is physically connected to the new school and can be entered from the school hall or from the new school forecourt - a shared public space for the school and the library. School and library can operate independently but can also work together enabling pupils to access the library from school. Equally, the community can use the school hall after school hours without opening the remainder of the school. As a result, toilets and change facilities are located off the hall to encourage community use.
The nursery has been located as close as possible to the public forecourt to give parents easy access without disrupting the rest of the school, as the two elements operate to different timetables.
The heart of the school is a dynamic, flexible area where many different activities can take place.
Redbrook Hayes Primary School is now in use.
