WAN AWARDS 11

About the awards

The WAN AWARDS Healthcare Sector is a major international competition, and the second of our 6 bi-monthly 'Excellence in Design' series by sector for 2012. There are two categories:

1. Completed Projects

2. Unbuilt / Design-Only Projects

Eligibility

For the 'completed' category, if you have designed a Healthcare building whether a hospital, surgery, medical centre or other healthcare facility that has been completed during the last three full calendar years, (on or after January 1st 2009), you can now enter for the WAN AWARDS Healthcare Sector 2012.

If you have a design for a healthcare building that is yet to be built - even if it may never be built - you can now enter your project into the 'Unbuilt' category for the WAN AWARDS Healthcare Sector 2012.

What's included in this sector?

All types of Healthcare projects can be submitted for the award, including:

-   Outpatient Clinics

-   Surgeries

-   Dental Clinics

-   Psychiatric Facilities

-   Care Homes & Day Care Centres

-   Pharmacies

-   Medical Laboratories

-   Wellness Centres

New for this year

In addition to the overall winners from the 'completed' and 'unbuilt' categories, this year we have introduced Special Commendations certificates for outstanding projects of each specific type, such as ‘best outpatient clinic', 'best hospital' and so on.

Judging criteria

The jury will judge entries on a number of factors including originality, innovation, form and special quality, sustainability and context, but the following two areas will carry the most weighting.

1. How your design addressed the key elements of the brief.

2. Specific examples of how your building has enhanced conditions for patients, staff and / or the wider community.

Presentation is also of great importance, and judges will be looking for your ability to communicate the 'story' of your building, from the initial concept through to its completion.

Promotion

The WAN AWARDS received over 1,300 entries last year, making it the largest international architecture awards programme in the world. All entries to the WAN AWARDS are published on the WAN website, which serves over 10 million page impressions each month. A gallery of all entries for each sector will be published in News Review and will feature permanently on the WAN website. The winning projects will be covered in a special News Review feature including a video of the judges' comments.

Selected projects from the pool of entries will be entered into our Featured Projects section in WAN News Review, a weekly focus on Healthcare buildings that will run during the award to generate even more exposure for participants. Each week, our editorial team will choose one project from the pool of entries to be our 'Healthcare Building of the Week'.

(Please be aware that if your project is chosen for this feature this does not automatically enter you through to the long list of 25 buildings, this is a separate judging process.)

In addition, press releases are sent out to numerous publications and are often picked up by local, national and international media, as well as a variety of industry publications. You will also be provided with a press kit to enable you to promote your achievements for yourselves. Past winners have reported that the WAN AWARDS' high profile and the publicity they received have contributed noticeably to their business success.

Benefits of entering

As we have developed the awards over the years, we have also tailored the news on the site to be sector-specific, which in turn promotes the winning and shortlisted projects of the awards to be pioneers of their sector, selected by the experts and specialists on the prestigious judging panel. The winning entrant receives an award certificate and their project makes headline news on WAN. The remaining five from the shortlist and any other schemes that the judges deem suitable will be listed as 'commended'.

The winning and shortlisted entrants all receive dedicated press kits and their projects will be featured in a special edition of News Review which reaches over 200,000 property developers, architects, consultants and organisations in 210 countries.

Press Kits

Winning and shortlisted entrants are provided with a press kit to enable them to promote their achievements; included in the kit is a prepared press release, a press contact list for national and international media and industry publications, and a 'WAN Winner' jpeg footer for emails and websites. Past winners have reported that the WAN AWARDS' high profile and the publicity they received have contributed noticeably to their business success.

The competition stages

A long list of twenty-five entries will initially be selected after the closing date. Further details of these projects will then be requested, including plans, sections, elevations and more technical information. From the twenty-five, a shortlist of six will be selected before an overall winner is chosen.
