WAN AWARDS 12

About the awards

The WAN Architectural Effectiveness Award is a major international competition which runs alongside our six bi-monthly 'Excellence in Design' sector series, now in its fourth year.

Eligibility

If you have designed a building that you think has produced a positive impact on society, you can now enter the WAN Architectural Effectiveness Award 2012. We recommend entering buildings that have been completed for at least 12 months, but provided you can support your case with substantial evidence of its effectiveness there are no restrictions in terms of completion dates.

What's included in this category?

Any buildings that meet the above entry criteria can be entered for the WAN Architectural Effectiveness Award 2012. This includes all sectors: Education, Residential, Healthcare, Civic, Commercial, Urban Design and Interiors.

Judging criteria

The jury panel will judge entries on a number of factors including originality, innovation, form and special quality, sustainability and context, but the following two areas will carry the most weighting:

1. How your design has made a positive impact on society. You must be able to demonstrate how your building has directly and/or indirectly benefited its users, the client, the surrounding community and beyond, against one or more of the following criteria: Social, Technological, Environmental, Economic and Productivity. Post-occupancy evaluation survey results and statistics will be strongly advantageous.

2. The way you present your project is of great importance. Judges will be looking for your ability to communicate the 'story' of your building, from the initial concept through to its completion, to support the evidence you provide.

Promotion

The WAN AWARDS received over 1,300 entries last year, making it the largest international architecture awards programme in the world. All entries to the WAN AWARDS are published on the WAN website, which serves over 10 million page impressions each month. A gallery of all entries for each sector will be published in News Review and will feature permanently on the WAN website. The winning projects will be covered in a special News Review feature including a video of the judges' comments.

Selected projects from the pool of entries will be entered into our Featured Projects section in WAN News Review, a weekly focus on civic / public buildings that will run during the award to generate even more exposure for participants. Each week, our editorial team will choose one project from the pool of entries to be our 'Project of the Week'.

(Please be aware that if your project is chosen for this feature this does not automatically enter you through to the long list of 25 buildings, this is a separate judging process.) In addition, press releases are sent out to numerous publications and are often picked up by local, national and international media, as well as a variety of industry publications. You will also be provided with a press kit to enable you to promote your achievements for yourselves. Past winners have reported that the WAN AWARDS' high profile and the publicity they received have contributed noticeably to their business success.

Benefits of entering

As we have developed the awards over the years, we have also tailored the news on the site to be sector-specific, which in turn promotes the winning and shortlisted projects of the awards to be pioneers of their sector, selected by the experts and specialists on the prestigious judging panel. The winning entrant receives an award certificate and their project makes headline news on WAN. The remaining five from the shortlist and any other schemes that the judges deem suitable will be listed as 'commended'.

The winning and shortlisted entrants all receive dedicated press kits and their projects will be featured in a special edition of News Review which reaches over 200,000 property developers, architects, consultants and organisations in 210 countries.

Press Kits

Winning and shortlisted entrants are provided with a press kit to enable them to promote their achievements; included in the kit is a prepared press release, a press contact list for national and international media and industry publications, and a 'WAN Winner' jpeg footer for emails and websites. Past winners have reported that the WAN AWARDS' high profile and the publicity they received have contributed noticeably to their business success.

The competition stages

A long list of 25 entries will initially be selected after the closing date, further details of the project: plans, sections, elevations and more technical information will then be requested from these entrants. From the 25, a shortlist of six will be selected before an overall winner is chosen. The winning entry will receive a framed award certificate. The remaining five from the shortlist and any other schemes that the judges deem suitable will be listed as "commended". The winning and shortlisted entries will be featured in a special edition of News Review which reaches over 145,000 property developers, architects, consultants and organisations in 210 countries.
