About the awards
The WAN AWARDS Sustainability category is a major international competition and is the culmination of our six bi-monthly 'Excellence in Design' series by sector for 2012.
The sustainability award covers all the main sectors; education / healthcare / civic / urban design / commercial / residential. Entries will close on 31 December. If you have designed a building in of one of these sectors that has been completed during the last three full calendar years, (on or after 01 January 2009), you can now enter for the WAN AWARDS Sustainability category 2012.
The jury will be looking for projects where the architects have holistically embraced sustainability without compromising the usual qualities found in good design: originality, innovation, form and dialogue with context.
Specifically the projects will -
- Have achieved a high level of recognised accreditation in the relevant country.
- Have crafted an evolution of the specific building typology.
- Have applied technology and a sustainable design process at every stage of the project: inception/completion/occupation.
- Be able to demonstrate that the selection process for the materials used on the project had been the subject of an in-house sustainability review. eg. sourced from local produce, renewable materials, manufactured offsite or produced from a low carbon manufacturing process.
The WAN AWARDS received over 1,300 entries last year, making it the largest international architecture awards programme in the world. All entries to the WAN AWARDS are published on the WAN website, which serves over 10 million page impressions each month. A gallery of all entries for each sector will be published in News Review and will feature permanently on the WAN website. The winning projects will be covered in a special News Review feature including a video of the judges' comments.
Selected projects from the pool of entries will be entered into our Featured Projects section in WAN News Review, a weekly focus on commercial projects that will run during the awards to generate even more exposure for participants.
Each week, our editorial team will choose one project from the pool of entries to be our 'Project of the Week'.
(Please be aware that if your project is chosen for this feature this does not automatically enter you through to the long list of 25 buildings, this is a separate judging process.)
In addition, press releases are sent out to numerous publications and are often picked up by local, national and international media, as well as a variety of industry publications. You will also be provided with a press kit to enable you to promote your achievements for yourselves. Past winners have reported that the WAN AWARDS' high profile and the publicity they received have contributed noticeably to their business success.
Benefits of entering
As we have developed the awards over the years, we have also tailored the news on the site to be sector-specific, which in turn promotes the winning and shortlisted projects of the awards to be pioneers of their sector, selected by the experts and specialists on the prestigious judging panel. The winning entrant receives an award certificate and their project makes headline news on WAN. The remaining five from the shortlist and any other schemes that the judges deem suitable will be listed as 'commended'.
The winning and shortlisted entrants all receive dedicated press kits and their projects will be featured in a special edition of News Review which reaches over 200,000 property developers, architects, consultants and organisations in 210 countries.
Winning and shortlisted entrants are provided with a press kit to enable them to promote their achievements; included in the kit is a prepared press release, a press contact list for national and international media and industry publications, and a 'WAN Winner' jpeg footer for emails and websites. Past winners have reported that the WAN AWARDS' high profile and the publicity they received have contributed noticeably to their business success.
The competition stages
A long list of 25 entries will initially be selected after the closing date, further details of the project: plans, sections, elevations and more technical information will then be requested from these entrants. The remaining five from the shortlist and any other schemes that the judges deem suitable will be listed as "commended".
