Highlights of the year past and a taste of the next….
Michael Hammond WAN Editor
This year WAN has soundly established itself as the most popular architectural news source in the industry. The phenomenal take-up rate of News Review has been steady at 1,000 per week passing the 50,000 mark in late November. Readers from 120 countries enjoy our weekly ‘snapshot’ news service and 24/7 website updates. Our editorial team has been substantially reinforced and also now includes reporters in New York and Beijing and will grow yet further in 2007. The final WTC images were released to the WAN network as breaking news as were the designs for London’s Tate Modern 2. Another key WAN objective was to ensure that we placed projects on the radar screens of developers and prospective clients. The statement from Steve McGuckin of Land Securities that he uses WAN as resource to locate architects clearly proves our success in this area.
This year saw WAN pioneering a range of PODCASTs featuring interviews, building walkabouts and highlights from the RIBA Jenks award evening. 2007 will start with a video tour of Foster and Partners 51 Lime Street tower in London. This will be the first of a new series of building tours and will available in streaming video and downloadable DVD formats.
Awards and Competitions Sara Mercer - Assistant Editor
This year WAN held an international design competition in conjunction with the Royal Academy of Arts (RA) in London. The competition was to design an Urban Eyrie – a haven in the city was won by Ricky Lee from Hong Kong and resulted in 10 finalists being ‘hung’ at the RA. Another RA design competition will be announced in January.
In December WAN launched the House of the Year 06 Awards and the response was overwhelming with entries from 28 countries ............view entries here
New for 2007
The WAN book store will be launched in January and will offer WAN readers the Best Books at the Best Prices. During 2006 some 700 projects have been featured on WAN and next year we will featuring the consultants, suppliers and products that have helped realise these projects. The Preferred Supplier Register will be launched in January and will only include companies nominated by the architect. This register will be another exclusive WAN resource for architects.
Featured Jobs Dominic Kos - Recruitment Manager
The WAN recruitment section has been growing strongly with candidates placed in most major cities this year. The quick and easy format of both viewing jobs and posting them has proved an extremely cost effective method of sourcing a wide range of qualified applicants. The WAN recruitment team will be further reinforced during 2007 and we aim to become the leading name in global recruitment. As architects become increasingly transient and online advertising continues to thrive, WAN is in a unique position to deliver quality candidates in 2007.
