Head, Department of Architecture
University of Manitoba
The Faculty of Architecture invites applications for the Head of the Department of Architecture beginning July 1, 2015 for a five year term and renewable subject to favourable review. The incumbent will be appointed to a tenure track or tenured at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
THE OPPORTUNITY: The Faculty of Architecture seeks a person who will inspire and advance the pedagogy and research of the Department in relation to the strategic plan of the Faculty and University. This is an opportunity for an individual to work in a dynamic academic environment who is dedicated to the pursuit of architectural excellence through teaching, scholarship, professional and community involvement.
Candidates must possess a professional degree in architecture, as well as a post-professional degree in architecture or related field. Those holding a Ph.D and/or professional architectural registration are encouraged to apply.
A record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, research and/or practice is essential. Consistent with our pedagogy, an understanding of ‘design as research’ and the studio environment as the context for design innovation is desirable. The successful candidate will work collegially: to strengthen pedagogical goals and program ambitions; to foster student involvement; to support existing and new research agendas including funding opportunities; to advance partnerships with the university, the profession, industry, and with other architecture programs nationally and internationally; and to promote the Department both here and abroad.
A record of academic administrative experience is essential. We seek a person who is a team builder and collaborator, who is approachable and can communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students. He/she will work administratively: to provide academic leadership, personnel management and fiscal accountability to the Department, the Dean’s office and the University; to engage the other disciplines in the Faculty; and to liaise with the profession, the community and with allied research and industry partners.
THE DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE: We are an energetic and diverse group of professors, instructors and practitioners who are committed to integrating design education with active scholarship and practice cultures. Our program and research address: design excellence; social and environmental sustainability; flood architecture; interdisciplinary explorations; rural to urban design; northern and First Nations communities; historical contexts and theoretical questions; technological and materials/construction innovation; new media; and community engagement. Emerging areas of integrated practices and globalization are also of interest to us.
We actively seek closer links with other disciplines and research units in our university including collaborations with the Faculties of Arts, Engineering, Environment, Earth and Resources, and Fine Arts among others. We also have established links with other universities and research organizations nationally and internationally. The professional program in Architecture is fully accredited by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB).
THE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE AND THE COMMUNITY: The Faculty is comprised of an undergraduate Environmental Design Program, four accredited professional programmes in Architecture, City Planning, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, and a recently established Ph.D. in Planning and Design. The University of Manitoba is a doctoral/research institution with 30,000 students and 9,000 faculty and staff.
