Design for London’s exhibition, London Open City, which opens at Somerset House on the 6 March, offers a new perspective on the capital while suggesting an approach of how to unlock the potential of London’s public places and streets. This exhibition illustrates the changes and adaptations that could be made to London to enrich and transform how we use our city in addition to addressing current and future needs.
London is a city of unexpected juxtapositions, a patchwork of different neighbourhoods each with its own identity that has a richness and complexity that reflect the needs and whims of successive generations. However, it is also a city that needs to adapt to meet the needs of an increasing and increasingly diverse population.
London Open City looks at how connections between different parts of the city can be improved; how a better balance can be achieved between vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians as well as suggestions of how to remove the physical and psychological barriers to movement through the city. It also explores new ways of activating spaces that are ‘lost’ or under used in order to accommodate varied and intensive use.
It shows how Design for London is working through the 100 Public Spaces programme to create new public spaces while enhancing existing ones. The exhibition also demonstrates how the East London Green Grid, the first phase of a city-wide network of interlinked green spaces, is a key initiative in creating a greener city, by unlocking one of London’s natural assets.
