One of the most dynamic and multifaceted building sites in the world, Asia is attracting the interest of architectural practitioners on a global scale. Asia, the cradle of fascinating cultures, is not only the arena where some of the most spectacular contemporary mega-buildings are going up.

A new social aesthetic is evolving in the East Asian architectural scene, amalgamating social awareness, ecological strategies and artistic practices. Bearing in mind the manifold cultural and regional references, the MAK exhibition EASTERN PROMISES. Contemporary Architecture and Spatial Practices in East Asia presents as its theme the promise of a future-oriented trend in architecture specifically associated with countries such as China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan.

The MAK was fortunate in winning the talents of Andreas Fogarasi and Christian Teckert as guest curators. Taking a narrative approach, they show the worlds that are emerging between the mega-architecture of superlatives and the traditional Asian art of building. While many of the recent prestigious buildings were produced by international (star) architects, there are increasing signs that a dynamic and innovative scene is taking shape in East Asian architecture.

EASTERN PROMISES encompasses around 65 architectural projects and spatial practices, which document a social and ecological reorientation of architecture and design, and inform on a representative cross-section of developments in this region. Apart from established architects like the Pritzker Prize winners Wang Shu (Amateur Architecture Studio), Kazuyo Sejima and Ry?e Nishizawa (SANAA), the exhibition will also feature emerging architects most of whose work will be shown for the first time in Austria.
