Donald Schmitt is a principal in the Toronto firm of Diamond and Schmitt Architects Incorporated. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto Schools and Faculty of Architecture, University of Toronto where he was awarded the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Medal for design in the thesis year.
He has been adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Toronto and the School of Architecture, Dalhousie University. He also taught at the University of Texas, University of Pennsylvania, University of Waterloo and University of British Columbia.
Notable projects include the Metro Central YMCA in Toronto and the Earth Sciences Centre at the University of Toronto, both recipients of the Governor General’s Medal; Symphony Hall, Detroit; and the Bahen Centre for Information Technology at the University of Toronto.
Mr. Schmitt and his firm have won over 150 design awards including six Governor General's Medals. He is the founding Chair of the Public Art Commission, City of Toronto. He is currently a member of the Advisory Committee on Planning Design and Real Estate of the National Capital Commission, Ottawa and on the Design Review Panel for Waterfront Toronto. He is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and a Board Member of the Canadian Art Foundation.
