Sheridan Coakley is a well-known figure in the British furniture design industry. He set up the furniture brand SCP in 1985, at a time when there were very few producers of modern furniture in Britain. Inspired by the designs of the Modern Movement, Coakley decided to start selling classic and hard to find pieces and also try his hand a roducing new designs in the same spirit. He has been credited with launching the areers of design luminaries such as Matthew Hilton, Konstantin Grcic and Jasper Morrison. Nearly three decades on, SCP remains true to its founding idea, to make and sell design products that are functional, beautiful and made to last.
Since those early heading days of creative entrepreneurialism, Coakley has continued to develop new products every year, recently launching the SCP 2011 collection which includes designs by Terence Woodgate, Matthew Hilton, Donna Wilson, PearsonLloyd, Kay+Stemmer, Gareth Neal, Lee Kirkbride, Sylvain Willenz and Rich Brilliant Willing.
Over two decades from its inception, Coakley is firmly established as one of the UK’s most innovative and internationally respected manufacturers and suppliers of contemporary design. In 2010 he won the Best Retail Innovation Award by Elle Decoration in The British Design Awards.
