Soraya Khan established Theis + Khan architects in 1995 with her partner Patrick Theis having met at Canterbury School of Architecture in 1982. Their practice has developed a research-based approach to architectural design that results in buildings that express a sense of place, are meaningful to their users and have architectural integrity.

Having completed a number of prestigious residential projects Soraya has worked on several community projects in Camden including Somers Town Youth Centre, Jubilee Waterside Centre and Coram’s Fields Youth Centre. Subsequently the alteration and extension of the 1960s Lumen Church and community centre in King’s Cross won an RIBA award in 2009. Current church projects include alterations to a Victorian Gothic church in Wanstead, Bayswater URC a mixed-use church and community centre with offices and a residential apartment and a new church and housing scheme in Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire. Commercial projects include the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation headquarters in Hoxton and Friends House office headquarters in Euston, whilst their healthcare projects include Bethnal Green Health Centre for Tower Hamlets PCT.

In September 2009 Soraya and Patrick completed their own mixed-use development in Shoreditch that was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize 2010 and won several major awards including RIBA London Building of the Year 2010, Daily Telegraph Mixed Use Regeneration Development of the Year 2010 and a Hackney Design Award 2010. It was also shortlisted for the RIBA Manser Medal 2010.

Soraya is a regular lecturer and jury panel member.
