Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture appoints new director

Russell Gilchrist, RIBA, has joined the staff of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture as a director, working on the firm’s supertall and high-performance projects around the world.

Like the firm’s founders, Smith and Gill, Gilchrist joins AS+GG from the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, where he was director of technical architecture and oversaw the execution of design of Pearl River Tower, the world’s most sustainable supertall building, now in the last stages of construction in Guangzhou, China. Pearl River Tower was designed by Gordon Gill and Adrian Smith while at SOM, which they left in 2006 to found their own firm.

A native of Scotland, Gilchrist previously worked largely in London including as an associate at Richard Rogers Partnership and senior designer at Foster + Partners. Besides Pearl River Tower, Gilchrist’s completed projects in Europe include 88 Wood Street in London and a winery in Peñafiel, Spain (at Richard Rogers Partnership), the Reichstag Parliament Building in Berlin (at Foster + Partners), and a new opera house at Glyndebourne (at Michael Hopkins & Partners).

Gilchrist holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Oxford University School of Architecture and has published and lectured widely on the subject of sustainability and tall buildings.
