Eva Franch to head New York’s Storefront

Eva Franch, a Spanish architect, has been appointed the new Director at the Storefront for Art and Architecture. She succeeds acting Director Joseph Grima, who recently stepped down to take the reins at Domus as the editorial director.

In an interview with Domus, Franch stated she enters Storefront at a time when ‘conditions have changed and practitioners have moved from construction sites to spaces of imagination and planning’, a condition that underscores the importance of “reestablishing relationships between architecture, art and other disciplines to construct innovative platforms of communication”. Franch describes Storefront as ‘an institution of the edge and in the edge’ not only ideologically but also in terms of temporality and physical location.

Franch will most likely not put her stamp on the storied gallery until sometime late in the year, as programs set by Grim are in place through December. But regarding what can be expected of Franch, she states that she would like to build on the gallery’s tradition of being ‘unpredictable and fresh’ and a place that gives importance to humour. Eva Franch is founder of Office of Architectural Affairs. She studied architecture at TU Delft and holds master’s degrees in architecture from ETS Arquitectura Barcelona and Princeton University. She received the Peter Reyner Banham Fellowship at the University of Buffalo where she taught for a year. In 2008, she was awarded the Worthham Fellowship at Rice University where she has been for two years as the master thesis studio director.
