Renowned architect, academic and critic Dennis Sharp loses battle with lung cancer

Celebrated British architect, critic and academic Dennis Sharp has died at the age of 76 following a two-year battle with lung cancer. Sharp studied at Luton School of Art before attending the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. Alongside his academic pursuits, Sharp also held various influential positions in multiple architectural publications. Beginning as a correspondent for Architectural Design and editor of Architecture North West, he was soon appointed as AA Vice President and later editor of World Architecture: Journal of the International Academy of Architecture of the IAA. Sharp’s involvement with the IAA continued for many years, and he eventually became a professor in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1991.

During his extensive career, Dennis Sharp spent two years as Vice President of the RIBA, was co-founder of the RIBA Architecture Centre and served as its chairman until 1996. He was also chair of the International Committee of Architectural Critics (CICA). Partner in Dennis Sharp Architects, his most high-profile projects include the renovation of the major Listed Buildings at Royal Ascot Racecourse and the Hastings Gateway, Kent.

His funeral is to be held on Saturday 22nd May and a celebration of his life is being planned for the summer.
