After seven years battling the developer of the $4.9 billion Atlantic Yards development project in downtown Brooklyn, Daniel Goldstein, who led the project’s opposition, has agreed to sell his apartment to developer Forest City Ratner for $3 million dollars. Goldstein’s apartment, which he purchased in 2003 for $590,000, sits in the footprint of the Barclay’s Center arena, the centerpiece of the 22-acre mega-project.
The settlement, reached Wednesday, is more monetary than anything else, as the state’s highest court ruled last November that all residents standing in the way of the project would be evicted presumably by month’s end to allow the project to move forward. But it does give added assurance to Forest City that the arena, which is now under construction, will open as planned for the 2012 National Basketball Association (NBA) season.
In addition to agreeing to vacate his apartment by May 7 in exchange for the $3-million payment, Goldstein has agreed to step down as the spokesman for Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn, which has opposed the project since 2004. He has also removed his name from the last lawsuit pending against the project.
