Bond Bryan to design six schools in Hartlepool

Bond Bryan Architects is the lead designer to the Balfour Beatty team, appointed by Hartlepool Borough Council to deliver a total of six schools under the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, part of a £104m investment in the town's schools.

The programme will begin with the remodelling of Dyke House Sports and Technology College, with more than a quarter of the college being demolished and rebuilt, and the remainder remodelled and refurbished. The second phase includes a new building for Catcote School and will see the majority of Manor College’s old structures being replaced with brand new buildings.

The third and final stage will see Bond Bryan re-design English Martyrs and High Tunstall schools, as well as designing a new Pupil Referral Unit. All six schools are set to be completed by 2015. John Hope, Associate at Bond Bryan, said: “This is an exciting and unique architectural opportunity to which we will apply the very highest standards of educational design across all six school projects that vary in scope from complete new build to partial refurbishment.

“The ‘street’ concept, which we developed with staff and students from the sample school, Dyke House Sports and Technology College, was a key factor in our winning the bid. This rationalises the building plan, giving it focus and clarity as it connects and showcases all the key areas of learning activity around a central community space, or heart.”

Work on Dyke House Sports and Technology College will begin immediately and Bond Bryan is currently finalising its design. As well as the ‘street', it will feature a new entrance and reception area, flexible learning spaces and school hall, science suites and a student services centre.
