Recent reports suggest that the Oman Railway project is about to advance to the next stage in its lengthy development process, as three key sections of track are delineated for implementation. The network itself is set to include an extensive 475 km long track in three directions, stretching from Misfat in Muscat to Sohar, from Sohar to Khatmat Malaha and from Sohar to Al Ain. Along this third section, a 28 km secondary line is set to link Buraimi to the transport system.
It has been reported that alignments for all three sections have been completed, and multiple studies have been undertaken to ensure the smooth construction and operation of the network. The Oman Railway has been designed to cater primarily to freight trains carrying industrial cargo, travelling at 200 km per hour; however, plans also suggest that the network will also include many passenger trains, with high speeds of up to 350 km per hour. These speeds are currently awaiting final confirmation. It is thought that during the next stage of development, the Supreme Committee will be appealing for international firms to oversee the project management and engineering design of the railway during the construction and operational stages. Both appointments will be made through the Tender Board.
