Bees hotel competition is all the buzz

Ever want to banish a bumblebee away? Or perhaps bemoaned the lack of luxury accommodations for the honeybee? The London Festival of Architecture is offering a solution. The this summer, the festival with British Land and The City of London Corporation have joined forces to launch ‘Beyond the Hive’, a new competition to design a five-star hotel for thee insect friends, or foes depending on your point of view.

The competition seeks to encourage biodiversity in London and to celebrate 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity. Participants are required to submit their proposals for an ecologically sustainable and creative insect habitat.

Five designs will be selected and the short listed teams will construct their hotel at one of the following public gardens in the City between 7 and 19 June: Bunhill Fields, West Smithfield, Postman’s Park, St Dunstan’s in the East and Cleary Garden.

A ‘Golden Beetle’ award will be presented in two categories, which will be chosen by a jury and the public. In the open judging category, the public will be invited to view the completed hotels at the five locations, and to vote for their favourite structure online between 19 and 28 June.

A jury of industry experts will select the overall winner. Judges include: Paul Finch, chairman of CABE and Programme Director of World Architecture Festival; Sarah Henshall, brownfield officer, Buglife; Adrian Penfold, head of planning and environment, British Land; Graham Stirk, director, Roger Stirk Harbour + Partners; and Peter Wynne Rees, city planning officer, City of London Corporation.
