SOM wins NYC train station project

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has inked a contract to begin design work on the first phase of the new Moynihan Station in New York City, according to the Moynihan Station Development Corp.

The project, which was proposed by and later named for U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, seeks to convert the Beaux-Arts James A. Farley Post Office — across Eighth Avenue from Pennsylvania Station — into a train station. SOM has been working on several versions of the project since the 1990s.

Phase 1 includes extending the west-end concourse beneath the post office for more access to additional tracks, improving platform ventilation and signal work and upgrading the connector between the post office and Penn Station underneath West 33rd Street. The project will also create two entrances next to post office’s grand staircase on the west side of Eighth Avenue, along with escalators and elevators leading to Amtrak platforms.

“This first phase of work will improve the train shed and all public access underground to make way for the public/private development work that will happen above. The historic Penn Station was a grand arrival and departure point for New York City and we are now laying the foundation for recapturing that sense of grandeur in the future,” said Mark Regulinski, SOM’s Partner in charge of this project.
