£200 million ‘FE’ for Liverpool architects

Liverpool-based architects Austin-Smith:Lord have completed a masterplan for the circa £60 million redevelopment of one of Wales’ largest Further Education (FE) colleges.

The practice was commissioned by Coleg Sir Gâr to develop a framework for consolidation of its Jobs Well and Pibwrlwyd campuses in Carmarthen, South Wales, into a single flagship development.

The project signals that the Liverpool team is currently working on £200 million of FE developments across north west England and Wales.

The practice is also delivering a £95 million redevelopment programme for Stockport College, a £4 million new build extension for Liverpool Community College and is acting as client advisor for the delivery of Mid Cheshire College’s Art Studios – the first phase of its Hartford Campus masterplan.

Austin-Smith:Lord’s five-phase proposal for the Carmarthenshire College will see the complete redevelopment of the Pibwrlwyd campus into 16,000 sq m of high quality, new build teaching and learning space over a five to ten year period.

Andy Smith, Director at Austin-Smith:Lord, said: “Education masterplanning is a huge growth area for the practice. We’ve set ourselves apart by offering expertise in curriculum analysis, which ensures the client’s long term ambitions for developing their curriculum are reflected in the design. These skills are often bought-in separately so providing this specialism in-house inspires confidence in the robust nature of the plans from the outset. “Our vision for the Pibwrlwyd campus will deliver an environment which meets the expectations of 21st century learners and can adapt to changes in future requirements.”

Coleg Sir Gâr is one of the largest Further Education colleges in Wales, with 13,000 students across five campuses.

Austin-Smith:Lord employs 60 people at its offices in the Port of Liverpool Building.
